MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Middle and high school teachers and students across California have something to celebrate today, as the AT&T Foundation revealed it "flash funded" all earth science projects listed by teachers on the education crowd-funding website DonorsChoose.org. In total, 65 projects were fulfilled, benefiting over 11,000 6th – 12th grade students with a total grant of $50,000.
"The future depends on the success of the next generation and the well-being of our planet," said Ken McNeely, president, AT&T California. "In celebration of Earth Day, we are thrilled to support the teachers and students who are studying earth sciences through projects that both inspire learning and help create a more sustainable world."
The Earth Day flash funding is part of the AT&T Aspire education initiative and builds upon the company's longstanding commitment to the environment. The announcement was made at Alta Vista High School, a Model Continuation High School, showcasing its Chicken and Gardens project teaching sustainability and urban farming. The grant supports a wide range of earth science projects across California including:
- Supplies for students to build an indoor greenhouse, maintain an aquaponics system and plan numerous urban gardens to study germination, pollination and ecology while giving back to the community.
- STEM projects for young scientists to test wind energy, wire a model home for solar energy, and other projects to explore the impacts of renewable energy generation.
- Equipment such as rock samples for biology students studying plate tectonics; plasma bulbs for astronomy students to visualize the stars; weather kits for students to measure and predict weather patterns; and much more.
