AT&T Helps I Know I Can Establish New Workshops for Students & Their Parents
Program helps parents find a feasible path to college education for their children
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* today announced a $7,500 contribution to I Know I Can's (IKIC) efforts to inspire, enable and support Columbus City Schools students in pursuing and completing their college education. The contribution was announced at the Blueprint: College Middle School series of workshops at Berwick Alternative K-8 School.
I Know I Can is a non-profit college access organization established in 1988, that serves low-income, minority, and/or first generation college bound hopefuls who lack thorough awareness of the benefits of post-secondary education.
IKIC provides the materials, financial support, mentoring, and counseling services needed to help high school students overcome barriers and achieve their higher education dreams. IKIC offers research-based college access and success programs to help high-school students get ready for, get accepted in, and get through higher education.
"With support of AT&T Ohio, I Know I Can can continue to make dreams come true for young people within Central Ohio to achieve their goal of attending college. As a board member of I Know I Can, I am happy to stand with this outstanding organization, and accept this check that will continue to support the workshops that help parents and their students," said State Representative W. Carlton Weddington.
Developed with parents in mind, Blueprint: College Middle School parent engagement workshops are a six-part series that invites Columbus City School's (CCS) sixth through eighth grade families to create their "blueprints" for college with assistance from IKIC college advisors. The program focuses on the importance of developing college-readiness and building a "college-culture" in homes beginning in middle school. AT&T's support will help the organization continue the program with high-school families.
"We are very grateful to have AT&T's support of our important efforts here at I Know I Can," said Katina Fullen, Executive Director. "AT&T believes strongly in the importance of education, and their partnership with I Know I Can will benefit hundreds of students right here in the Columbus City Schools."
"AT&T is firmly committed to working with local organizations like I Know I Can to strengthen communities and advance education," said David Kandel, Director, External Affairs, AT&T Ohio. "We are very pleased to be a partner with I Know I Can's great success for students in our community."
