Award-Winning Living Voters Guide 2012 Launched in Washington & California
SEATTLE, Oct. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- CityClub, University of Washington's Center for Communication & Civic Engagement and its Department of Computer Science and Engineering are proud to announce the launch of Washington State's 2012 Living Voters Guide, www.livingvotersguide.org. An innovative online tool that fosters voter education, deliberation and civil discourse, it was used by nearly 25,000 state voters over two election cycles. Living Voters Guide is a tool to promote digital democracy and elicit broad public input for policy development.
Living Voters Guide invites participants to discuss ballot measures together, to explore one another's positions, and to build a personal, customized platform that will inform their final vote. This voters' guide is co-created by everyone who participates. It evolves as you and neighbors across our state consider the tradeoffs for each measure. It requires participants to pledge that they will not make personal attacks on others but focus on the issues before us. It invites everyone to wrestle with both the pros and cons of ballot measures in a deliberative path toward decision making.
Living Voters Guide 2012 includes the six statewide measures, and features the officially designated ballot titles and descriptions from the Office of the Secretary of State. Users can submit their pros and cons and take a position on the issue. A new component to the 2012 Living Voters Guide is on demand fact checking provided by the Seattle Public Library. Users can request a fact-check on a point brought up by another user. A librarian will respond to verify or deny the claim–or to explain why it cannot be verified–and to provide additional information and context.
On Monday, October 1, 2012 the Living Voters Guide was awarded the Best Overall App at the Evergreen App Challenge and was also awarded the Best State App. For the first time, Living Voters Guide is also in California, supported by a grant from The Whitman Institute (CA) www.cali.livingvotersguide.org addresses 11 statewide ballot measures.
