Babson College Announces the Establishment of a New Distinguished Professorship in Global Surgery
Funded by the Kletjian Foundation, the new distinguished professorship furthers Babson's efforts to bring entrepreneurial solutions to pressing global healthcare challenges
BABSON PARK, Mass., April 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Babson College has established a new, endowed distinguished professorship, the Steven C. and Carmella R. Kletjian Foundation Distinguished Professor in Global Surgery, with a $3 million gift by the Steven C. and Carmella R. Kletjian Foundation.
"The leadership and inspiration of entrepreneurs of all kinds is needed to defeat our most complex global healthcare challenges," said Babson College President Kerry Healey. "Thanks to the generosity of the Kletjian Foundation, we can intensify our efforts to bring the transformative power of entrepreneurship to global surgery, a field critically in need of new, sustainable approaches."
The announcement was made at the College's inaugural Babson Connect: Worldwide event held in Cartagena, Colombia, as hundreds of business and community leaders from Latin America gathered with Babson MBA alumni and members of Babson governance from around the world. Donald Hannan III, Director of the Kletjian Foundation, joined President Kerry Healey at a ceremony to formally establish the new distinguished professorship.
"The majority of today's global health challenges are managerial, not medical," said Kletjian Foundation Founder and Director, Carmella Kletjian, who has served as a member of the Babson College Board of Trustees since 2011. "The barriers to delivering quality care are countless and they require us to think beyond disease-specific solutions and confront issues surrounding health systems overall. Babson's unique methodology of Entrepreneurial Thought and Action® will enable medical professionals to re-envision the global health agenda and take action to confront issues within health systems in low-resource settings. We are thrilled to continue to invest in Babson, the recognized world leader in entrepreneurial education, as we work to fuel and advance entrepreneurial solutions to global health challenges."
The new faculty role builds on a partnership Babson College and the Kletjian Foundation formed in 2013 to advance both organizations' commitment to harnessing the transformative power of entrepreneurship to benefit the field of global healthcare. Through the Leonard A. Schlesinger Fund for Global Healthcare Entrepreneurship, funded by the Kletjian Foundation in honor of Babson's 12th President, Babson has assembled a team of global healthcare leaders and educators to explore the state of global surgery and health through the lens of entrepreneurship and business organization principles. These efforts further highlight the necessity of unconventional global health solutions and showcase the potential world-changing results of applying Babson's methodology of Entrepreneurial Thought and Action® in this space. The Kletjian Foundation also has endowed chairs and centers at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary to ensure there is a collaborative network working together to solve these complex issues.
On May 7, 2015, Babson will host the Global Healthcare Entrepreneurship Summit, which will bring together experts from around the world to present and discuss the first several in a series of eight teaching cases developed by Babson for the Lancet Commission on Global surgery. These cases showcase remarkable achievements made by global innovators as well as continuing challenges in the equitable delivery of surgical care to the world's poor. All cases developed as part of this initiative will be published online by the Lancet Commission later this year, allowing them to be taught by a wide range of educational institutions around the world such as schools of public health, business schools, medical and dental schools, nursing programs, and other surgical and anesthesia training programs, without requiring any fees for the teaching materials.
The Steven C. and Carmella R. Kletjian Foundation Distinguished Professor in Global Surgery is the third newly established endowed professorship at Babson in the last year. Earlier this year, Babson established the Robert E. Weissman '64 H'94 P'87 P'90 and Janet Weissman P'87'90 Professor of Business Analytics. In June 2014, Babson received a $3 million gift from the Bertarelli Foundation to fund the Bertarelli Foundation Distinguished Professor in Family Entrepreneurship.
