Chief Operating Officer To Take On Additional Role
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Barney & Barney, a Marsh & McLennan Insurance Agency LLC company, today announced that Hal Dunning, the firm's Chief Operating Officer (COO), has been promoted to the additional role of President, a new position at the firm. The move is effective immediately.
As President/COO, Dunning has operations oversight responsibility for the firm's offices in San Diego, Orange County, San Francisco, Walnut Creek and Anchorage. Barney & Barney comprises the western regional operations of Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Marsh serving the risk management and insurance needs of middle market companies in the United States.
Dunning was named COO of Barney & Barney in 2006 and previously served as Chief Financial Officer. In addition to his success overseeing the firm's operations, Dunning played a key role in the formation of the Barney & Barney Foundation and in developing the firm's G.R.O.W. Initiative, which is designed to attract, retain and develop women leaders at Barney & Barney.
He is based in San Diego and reports to CEO Paul Hering.

In 2009, Dunning was honored with the "Lifetime Achievement Award" by the San Diego Business Journal and was recognized by the publication in 2007 as a "CFO of the Year." He is a member of the Lead San Diego Class of 2008 and won its Herb Klein Visionary Leadership Award. Dunning has also chaired the CFO Roundtable since 2001 and is chairman of Day for Change, a charity started by the CFO Roundtable that serves abused and neglected children. He also serves on the board of the San Diego Foundation and is a member of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. In 2012, after 11 years, he stepped down as President of the Board of Walden Family Services, the largest foster family agency in San Diego. Dunning has served as a volunteer at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla since 1995.
Dunning has 35 years of business and leadership experience. Prior to joining Barney & Barney in 2001, Dunning was the Western Region General Manager and Controller of ADS Environmental Systems. Earlier in his career, he worked for Anthony Industries, Inc. (now K2, Inc.) and the accounting firm Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young). Dunning earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College and an MBA in accounting and taxation from the University of Southern California.
