GLADSTONE, Australia, April 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Bechtel today announced that it has reached a significant milestone at the liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant it is building on Curtis Island, Australia, for Santos GLNG. The first of six gas turbine generators (GTG) has become operational, producing power for the site, a critical step toward production of LNG. While the GTGs vary in size, each will be able to produce about 12 megawatts of electricity, equivalent to the electricity used to power 11,000 homes. GTGs will eventually supply electricity for the entire plant, ensuring that the power supply used in the local communities is not affected.
"Our recent milestones – bringing gas onto site, lighting the flare and firing the first GTG – are key steps to the successful start of LNG production on the project. This remarkable progress is the result of hard work from our team and a great level of coordination with our customer, Santos GLNG," said Alasdair Cathcart, Bechtel's global LNG general manager. "2015 is a critical year for our Curtis Island construction teams implementing an unprecedented program that will have all three plants producing LNG, including the second train on Queensland Curtis LNG."
Bechtel is a global leader in LNG construction and is currently building six production trains on three LNG projects on Curtis Island. When complete next year, the Curtis Island plants will produce about 25 million tonnes of LNG annually. Bechtel is also the principal downstream contractor for the Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project in Western Australia.
