Beyond Type 1's ninth annual marathon team will challenge misconceptions about diabetes on one of the world's most demanding athletic stages to kick off National Diabetes Awareness Month
NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Beyond Type 1, the global nonprofit changing what it means to live with diabetes, today announced its 2026 Beyond Type Run team. Eighty runners living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, alongside caregivers and family members, will take on the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1, kicking off National Diabetes Awareness Month by raising critical funds and showing the world what life with diabetes really looks like.
Diabetes is still surrounded by misconceptions and stereotypes: that people caused their condition through lifestyle choices, that they are physically limited by their diagnosis or that an active life is out of reach. Research has found diabetes stigma affects up to 98% of youth and adolescents with type 1 diabetes, 78% of adults with type 1 diabetes and 70% of adults with type 2 diabetes, with consequences for both psychosocial well-being and health outcomes. Beyond Type Run offers a powerful counterpoint to those assumptions with every mile.
Now in its ninth year, Beyond Type Run has brought hundreds of runners impacted by diabetes to the TCS New York City Marathon, from first-time marathoners and seasoned endurance athletes to caregivers and families from around the world. For runners living with diabetes, completing 26.2 miles means taking on the demands of a marathon while also managing blood glucose, fueling, insulin and other variables throughout training and race day.
The program will reach a new milestone in April 2027, expanding internationally for the first time with a Beyond Type Run team at the TCS London Marathon.
"Beyond Type Run brings our mission to life: individuals impacted by diabetes coming together to challenge assumptions, expand what others believe is possible and raise critical support for our work," said Simone Grapini-Goodman, CEO of Beyond Type 1. "With our largest marathon group yet and our first international team launching in London in 2027, we're building a more connected global movement proving that diabetes and its challenges don't limit a person's life or possibilities."
Among this year's New York City runners are South Florida brothers Adam and Joseph Abdin, who finished third on Season 38 of The Amazing Race. Adam has lived with type 1 diabetes since age 12.
"The Amazing Race taught us that diabetes is something we have to account for as a team, but it doesn't have to determine what we take on," said Adam Abdin. "Now we get to tackle a completely different challenge together in New York. If someone living with diabetes sees us at that starting line and thinks differently about what might be possible for them, that means more to us than any finish time."
Beyond Type Run is an Official Charity Partner of the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon through New York Road Runners' Official Charity Partner Program, which provides guaranteed marathon entries to athletes who raise funds on behalf of participating nonprofit organizations. Since its inception in 2006, the program has raised nearly $700 million for more than 1,000 nonprofits around the world.
The 2026 team is made possible with support from Founding and Presenting Sponsor Dexcom, and Community Level Sponsor MiniMed.
