BlitzResults.com Study: 65% of All Children Wear Too Small Shoes
Outdated "Tricks" for Size Determination Do More Harm Than Good
NEW YORK, Nov. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Children's shoes that are too small can cause serious health issues such as deformities and poor posture. A theoretical problem? No, almost two thirds of all children wear shoes that are too small. But how can this happen in the first place? And what can parents do to avoid health issues for their beloved offspring?
A total of 2109 parents were asked in an online panel about the foot length and shoe size of their offspring, as well as buying habits. After the measurement instructions were issued and the values entered, the optimum shoe size was calculated and the parents were asked to measure the actual inside shoe length by means of a stencil.
The main findings in the summary:
- 65% of all children wear shoes that are too small. Of these, 47% are one size too small and 18% even two sizes too small.
- Only 35 % have the right size. However, only 11 % of those have a growth reserve.
- 52 % of all parents stated that they had never measured the length of their children's feet before, but rather relied solely on sensorial and visual tests.
The most important tips to find the right size:
- The right and left foot rarely have the same length. A difference in length of up to half an inch is completely normal - but this corresponds to almost an entire shoe size. Parents should therefore always be guided by the longer foot when buying shoes.
- Shoe manufacturers label their shoes with the standard sizes everybody knows. But there is no mandatory industry standard. In practice, each brand uses a slightly different size. And there are also huge variances in production. Therefore, never blindly rely on shoe sizes. Try out every shoe carefully. "Since the sense of touch is not yet fully developed in children, children tend to squeeze their feet into shoes that are much too small -- without even noticing it. Parents are therefore obliged to check the shoes of their offspring regularly," recommends Tim Lilling, Expert at blitzresults.com.
- Most parents know that feet need enough space. But they regularly underestimate the actual space requirement. At least ½ inch additional leeway are optimal, as this is the only way for children to roll properly through their feet when walking.
