Brittany Maynard Named One of PEOPLE's 25 Most Intriguing People
Magazine Honors Death-With-Dignity "Crusader"
PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today's issue of PEOPLE Magazine recognizes Brittany Maynard as one of the 25 most intriguing people of 2014 for her role as "The Crusader" in the death-with-dignity movement, in partnership with Compassion & Choices.
American adults now believe by a record 5-to-1 margin (74% support vs. 14% oppose) that terminally ill adults – in great pain and with no chance for recovery – have the right to choose to end their own life, according to a HealthDay/Harris Poll released last week.
In addition, since the Oct. 6 launch of Brittany's joint campaign with Compassion & Choices, 20 newspapers in 11 states have endorsed death with dignity, also known as the medical practice of aid in dying.

On Nov. 13, 12 days after Brittany's death, the New Jersey Assembly passed an aid-in-dying bill.
On Nov. 19 – what would have been Brittany Maynard's 30th birthday – Compassion & Choices launched a national initiative for expanded access to death with dignity with a "call to action" video narrated by Brittany on Oct. 13-14.
"I hope for the sake of other American citizens all these people that I'm speaking to that I've never met, that I'll never meet, that this choice be extended to you … That we mobilize, that we vocalize, that we start to talk about it," said Brittany in the video. In Brittany's honor, lawmakers have pledged to introduce bills to authorize death with dignity in 16 states: California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Currently, five states authorize aid in dying: Oregon, Washington, Montana, Vermont and New Mexico.
