Bullen Ultrasonics Highlights Partnership with Preble County ESC's Project LIFE to Advance Workforce Readiness for Young Adults with Disabilities

Ongoing collaboration provides Project LIFE interns with hands-on manufacturing experience while helping them build confidence, independence and employability skills

EATON, Ohio, Sept. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Bullen Ultrasonics, a leader in precision machining of advanced ceramics, glass and specialty materials using proprietary ultrasonic and laser-based technologies, is highlighting its partnership with Preble County Educational Service Center's Project LIFE, a local program site of the nationally replicated Project LIFE model that helps students and young adults with disabilities build skills for employment, independent living and community participation.

Developed by Butler Tech, Project LIFE is a comprehensive, multi-year transition program that combines classroom and life-skills education with authentic work experiences to prepare students with disabilities for a self-determined future. Project LIFE currently has 57 programs across the U.S. and two in Canada and continues to expand as more school districts and businesses learn about the program. The program model is designed to help students develop, practice and strengthen skills that are high predictors of increased adult independence and successful, integrated employment in the community.

Bullen began working with Preble County ESC's Project LIFE in fall 2024, opening its Eaton facility as a job-site rotation where interns gain hands-on experience in a professional manufacturing environment. Since then, Project LIFE interns have supported a range of workplace tasks, including cleaning conference rooms and break areas, stocking workplace supplies, assisting with facilities tasks and helping change filters on Bullen's manufacturing equipment.

The partnership gives interns exposure to manufacturing while helping them practice workplace communication, teamwork, professionalism, self-advocacy and responsiveness to feedback in a real work environment. For Bullen employees, the partnership has also created opportunities to mentor interns, build relationships and recognize the value young adults with disabilities can bring to the workplace.

They are learning how to advocate for themselves, respond to feedback, communicate with supervisors and build confidence in a real workplace," said Laura White, Project LIFE Instructor at Preble County ESC. "The work they do at Bullen gives them a chance to be held to real workplace standards while also being supported as they develop the soft skills that are critical for long-term independence and employment."

Preble County ESC's Project LIFE program is now in its fourth year and is serving 11 interns this year, compared with eight interns in its first year. The program serves interns ages 18 to 21 who have met Ohio's graduation requirements and deferred their diplomas to continue building life and employability skills. Interns spend part of each day in classroom-based instruction focused on practical adult-life skills, followed by authentic work-based learning at community job sites such as Bullen Ultrasonics.

"Project LIFE is helping these young adults gain independence, but it is also helping our employees see their value as team members and contributors," said Ronnie Bailey, manager of people & systems at Bullen Ultrasonics. "At first, people may see the interns as visitors. Over time, they become part of the team. When a rotation ends, our employees notice they are gone and miss having them here. That is when you know the partnership is making a real impact."

The Bullen job-site rotation is one of several work-based learning experiences offered through Preble County ESC's Project LIFE program. Interns also participate in other community job sites and operate their own small business, Paws for a Purpose, where they make and sell pet products, including dog treats. These experiences give interns exposure to different types of work while helping them identify strengths, interests and areas for continued growth.

Project LIFE's outcomes show measurable progress. According to Preble County ESC's Project LIFE outcomes report, 96% of year-one post-assessments showed growth, while 100% of both year-two and year-three post-assessments showed growth. Two of three interns who exited the program in year one are working, and three of four interns who exited in year two are working. The program has also helped interns pass temporary driving permit tests and obtain driver's licenses through connected support services.

"There are still misconceptions about what a program like this looks like," White said. "Our interns are building budgets, learning workplace communication, practicing professional behavior and working in real businesses. My goal is that no young adult who could benefit from Project LIFE slips through the cracks."

Bullen Ultrasonics will continue supporting Project LIFE through job-site rotations and community engagement, including Project LIFE's open house on Dec. 3. Participating companies will host booths at the event, while interns will share presentations about their experiences in the program. The open house will also give Bullen an opportunity to connect with community members, highlight its involvement with Project LIFE and see firsthand the impact the program is making for interns and their families.

"Seeing former interns working in the community is incredibly rewarding," Bailey said. "You see someone who was part of Project LIFE now employed at a restaurant, a grocery store or another local business, and you realize the experience they gained matters. It is good for the interns, good for our employees and good for the community."
