Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Upgrades to CompuLert™ NEXGen Central Control Platform
Plant invests in state-of-the-art monitoring, alerting and mass notification upgrade
MILWAUKEE, Aug. 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- American Signal Corporation (ASC) is proud to announce that the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, located in Lusby, Md., has upgraded to the CompuLert™ NEXGen central control platform. Effective immediately, the plant's early warning, threat detection, alerting and mass notification systems will be operated centrally from the NEXGen system.
Featuring two reactors, the Calvert Cliffs plant will rely heavily on the redundant, fault-tolerant, failsafe operations offered by CompuLert™ NEXGen. Plant operators will also leverage robust monitoring and alerting features, including predictive failure modeling, fleet-wide visibility and management, ERO alerting and more. Thanks to its N-tier infrastructure, the system will also enable comprehensive system management at all times, regardless of geographic or terminal login location.
Security is also a prime component of the NEXGen upgrade. Running on NEXGen, Calvert Cliffs will experience enhanced security that prevents 'man-in-the-middle' hacking attempts, while enabling administrator authentication protocols and application-level encryption (symmetric AES).
NEXGen further ties itself into the everyday operations of Calvert Cliffs as a direct controller of the plants many alerting systems. The system works in tandem with sirens, speaker arrays, lights, digital mediums and more. In the event of an emergency, compliance testing or turnover, NEXGen has the power to create and disseminate mass notifications through multiple channels, to make sure it's seen plant-wide.
"There is no substitute for reliability in this industry. CompuLert™ NEXGen was designed to meet and exceed all of the standards set down by the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, FEMA and other organizations, making it an industry leading option for reliability and effectiveness," said Richard Roe, Executive Vice President at American Signal Corporation. "We're extremely proud to add Calvert Cliffs to the list of other nuclear stations putting NEXGen to work in a potentially life-saving capacity."
Calvert Cliffs Power Plant is located just 50 miles Southwest of Washington, D.C. In operation since 1975, the plant produces upwards of 1,757 net megawatts of power annually. The plant is also committed to efficiency, boasting a 95.6% operating uptime and a reputation for worker safety that's record-setting within the industry. The upgrade to NEXGen is a reinvestment in this reputation.
