WAYNE, N.J., June 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Castrol® EDGE® team is thrilled to congratulate Alexander Rossi for his rookie win at the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 in the No. 98 NAPA Auto Parts/Castrol EDGE Honda Indy car. Only the 10th rookie to win the world's biggest auto race, it was one for the history books featuring 54 lead changes, 13 different leaders and 850 passes throughout the field.
A race with no shortage of excitement took a surprising turn when Rossi declined his final pit stop with 85 miles of racing remaining. Typically, an Indy car holds only 19 gallons of fuel and averages 4 miles per gallon; which in Rossi's case meant he should have only been able to complete 76 more miles, leaving the American short of the finish line. A seemingly impossible task, Rossi pushed the boundaries and won on fumes with Castrol EDGE motor oil.
"We're pleased to have worked with Castrol to select an engine lubricant that meets our performance and durability goals," said Mark Crawford, IndyCar Engine Large Project Leader, Honda Performance Development. "Our congratulations to Alexander Rossi and the entire Andretti-Herta team on their incredible victory."
"With today's engines running hotter and operating under tremendous pressure, it is more critical now than ever to use the strongest motor oil possible and Castrol EDGE is engineered to perform under the toughest of conditions," stated Rich Pond, Head of Castrol Marketing in the Americas. "We are proud to partner with Bryan Herta Autosport, Andretti Autosport and Honda to demonstrate that Castrol EDGE delivers both performance and durability to contribute to the win of the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500; a tremendous platform to both showcase superior motor oil performance and to connect with Verizon IndyCar Series fans."
