Charles Warner and David Viano Earn SAE International Arnold W. Siegel Transportation Safety Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., May 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The late Charles Y. Warner, former senior engineer with Collision Safety Engineering, and David C. Viano, a principal of ProBiomechanics, LLC,  have been awarded the SAE International Arnold W. Siegel International Transportation Safety Award. The awards were presented during the SAE 2010 World Congress, held this past April in Detroit. Mr. Warner's son, Mark Warner, accepted the award on behalf of his father.

Established in 1987, the Arnold W. Siegel International Transportation Safety Award recognizes individuals whose accomplishments include outstanding international research, innovation and contributions to crash injury protection, crash injury biomechanics and crash injury design for all mobility vehicles: land, air, sea and space. The award recognizes the work of Arnold Siegel, whose pioneering research has contributed to modern crashworthy transportation vehicles and to the understanding of human tolerance in collisions.

Dr. Warner is a former professor of mechanical engineering at Brigham Young University. He served for two years with the U.S. Department of Transportation. In addition, he founded Collision Safety Engineering, a company that specializes in research and consulting in the field of crashworthiness. He published more than 100 technical articles and papers and earned the honor and respect of colleagues in a variety of automotive safety organizations worldwide. He was an inventor of many useful methods and mechanisms, and never tired of striving for improvement.  

Dr. Warner served in the U.S. Air Force and earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering; a master's degree from Brigham Young University; and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. For more information on Dr. Warner, contact Mark Warner at [email protected] .

In addition to his role with ProBiomechanics, Dr. Viano is an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State University, Detroit, and since 2002, is the Director of the Sport Injury Biomechanics Laboratory.  Since 1997, Dr. Viano has been a consultant to the National Football League on concussions and is member of the Injury and Safety Panel.  He twice served on Advisory Committees for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).   In 2002, Dr. Viano retired from General Motors Corporation where he was Principal Scientist from 1987.  From 1974-1998, he worked at the GM Research Laboratories.  Dr. Viano is Editor of Traffic Injury Prevention, an indexed journal.  He is a Fellow of SAE International, AAAM and ASME. During his career, Dr. Viano has published more than 300 journal and technical papers on engineering and medical aspects of automotive and sport safety.  He has written and/or edited five books on automotive safety.      

Dr. Viano received a BSEE (cum laude, 1968) from the University of Santa Clara and master's (1969) and Ph.D. (1972) in applied mechanics from the California Institute of Technology.  He has a Doctor of Medicine (1998) from Karolinska Medical School, Sweden.
