DALIAN, China, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- China Industrial Waste Management, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: CIWT) ("China Industrial Waste Management" or the "Company"), a leading environmental services and solutions provider in China, today announced that its Dongtai Organic sewage sludge treatment facility in Dalian, Liaoning Province, which utilizes anaerobic fermentation to generate clean energy methane gas, was voted "Best Sewage Sludge Process Application of China" at the 2nd Water Specialist Conference which was held in Shanghai on August 31, 2010.

The conference was hosted by ChinaWater.net, the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design General Institute, and the China Association for Science and Technology. The conference participants evaluated nearly 80 cases based on the following six criteria: (i) length of operation; (ii) compliance with technical standards; (iii) energy efficiency; (iv) economic viability; (v) maintenance and management; and (vi) industry reputation.

"There are over 2,000 sewage treatment plants in China, but not many sludge treatment facilities. Eighty percent of the sludge generated in China has not received proper processing before being discarded and can cause serious pollution. In the PRC's 12th Five-Year Plan, which covers the period of 2011 to 2015, the central government has stated it will invest RMB 500 billion (approximately $74 billion) in solid waste processing, of which RMB 100 billion (approximately $15 billion) will be invested in sewage sludge treatment.

"We believe the anaerobic fermentation sewage sludge treatment process used in our Dalian facility is among the most advanced sludge treatment technologies in the world. Land filling, which is currently the most popular sewage sludge treatment method in China, cannot effectively remove pollutants in sludge and causes secondary pollution, such as contamination of water and soil. Other methods, such as incineration, have higher operational costs which cannot be covered by the revenue generated from electricity generation and depend heavily on government subsidies. On the other hand, our anaerobic fermentation sewage sludge treatment process is not only effective, but also economically viable on a stand-alone basis. Our Dongtai Organic sewage sludge treatment facility collects fees for the sludge we process and generates additional revenue from the sale of methane gas that is generated by the anaerobic fermentation process. According to our calculations, we estimate that if anaerobic fermentation were used to treat all of the 30,000 tons of sewage sludge generated by China this year, it would generate approximately 2.5 billion cubic meters of methane gas per year, which is considered a clean energy, or approximately 4 billion kilowatts per year of electricity and would reduce carbon emissions by approximately 15 million tons per year.

This lack of consensus has made it difficult to promote the sewage sludge treatment technology we utilize on a nationwide basis.
