CHICAGO, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Serving nearly three million residents, the City of Chicago recently signed a five-year, $12 million contract with AT&T for wireless solutions that will allow the City's many departments to monitor and manage operations. Running on the fastest 3G network in the city, City of Chicago departments will have access to a set of leading smartphones and devices, as well as cost-saving and efficiency-driving mobile applications such as wireless work order management.
Already Chicago's primary telecommunications provider, AT&T is now helping the City's departments take advantage of mobile applications that can be integrated with their current traditional AT&T services. AT&T currently provides GPS services to virtually all Chicago vehicles from the Department of Streets and Sanitation to the Department of Aviation. AT&T's ability to offer simultaneous voice and data service on 3G will allow City of Chicago workers to expand the breadth of applications they use for critical initiatives, such as public transportation and safety programs.
For the past five years, the City of Chicago has used AT&T's wireless data network to track vehicles. This winter, for example, it will continue to have significant control over the management and deployment of City vehicles during severe weather. Providing real-time location information, as well as specifics like idle time monitoring, vehicle speed and miles driven, AT&T's fleet management application will help City workers streamline their efforts and better ensure the safety of City neighborhoods.
