NEW YORK, March 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Bayer's Consumer Health Division, the makers of Claritin®, the #1 selling non-drowsy allergy brand, has teamed up with allergy sufferer Kelly Rowland and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to help youth enjoy the benefits of being outdoors. Together with Rowland, a long-time Boys & Girls Clubs supporter, the makers of Claritin will fund the makeover of outdoor spaces at Clubs in three cities across the country.
There may be benefits of time spent outdoors, but it turns out children may not spend much time outside. As we know from a 2004 study, children ages 6 – 17 spend about 30 minutes engaging in outdoor or sports activities per day, while they spend nearly two hours per day watching television. As a brand that encourages people to get outside, Claritin is unveiling a new initiative to help Boys & Girls Clubs create active outdoor spaces for youth.
As a nationally recognized youth organization, Boys & Girls Clubs serve nearly four million young people through membership and community outreach. This Spring, Claritin is funding the updating of play spaces in its backyard community of New York City with Boys & Girls Clubs affiliate Educational Alliance, in Rowland's hometown of Atlanta and in St. Louis. Long known for their efforts to encourage healthy lifestyles for their members, Boys & Girls Clubs will use these spaces to engage youth in afterschool, out-of-classroom sports and recreation.
"We are so honored to be working with Claritin and our long-time ambassador Kelly Rowland on this very meaningful program," said Jim Clark, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. "Between class, our afterschool programs and technology, many of our members in urban areas spend much of their time indoors, and coming to one of our Clubs is their best opportunity to be active outdoors. Thanks to this impactful program with Claritin, more of our members will have fresh, new outdoor spaces to spend time."
As one of approximately 75 million Americans who have allergies, Rowland is very familiar with how seasonal allergy symptoms can make the Spring season difficult to cope with and keep people stuck inside. As a mom, she also realizes how important it is to spend time with family outdoors and relies on Claritin for powerful, 24-hour, non-drowsy relief during her allergy season.
"Spending time outdoors helps my family and me set aside everyday distractions and feel our best," said Rowland. "I remember feeling as though I was trapped inside when the pollen count climbed. My worst symptoms were itchy, watery eyes and a runny nose, but now, I reach for Claritin when I have allergy symptoms. Everyone should be able to enjoy spending time outdoors, regardless of if they have seasonal allergies. That's why I'm so proud that in my second year working with Claritin, the brand is teaming up with an organization I've been working with for years and is so close to my heart, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, so members can more fully enjoy their play time outdoors."
Practicing physician and co-chief at Allergy and Asthma Care of New York, and Claritin C.L.E.A.R Council Member Jonathan Field, M.D. also recognizes the significant impact allergy symptoms have on his patients, and their need for a medication that works powerfully, lasts all day and is non-drowsy.
"Over the past several years as weather patterns have varied greatly, I've seen a significant uptick in the prevalence and severity of patients complaining of seasonal allergy symptoms," said Dr. Field. "Many of my patients who suffer from seasonal allergies struggle daily with sneezing and itchy, watery eyes that keep them indoors. I recommend taking one Claritin every day of your allergy season when symptoms start for as long as triggers remain."
