
New research finds China's IIoT developers (48%) outpace the global average (42%) in cloud native adoption as AI infrastructure matures

SHANGHAI, Sept. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + OpenInfra Summit + PyTorch Conference China -- The Cloud Native Computing Foundation® (CNCF®), which builds sustainable ecosystems for cloud native software, today released new findings from its latest State of Cloud Native Development in China report, in collaboration with SlashData. The report features China-specific insights stemming from the Q1 2026 State of Cloud Native Development report. The research dives into China's growing cloud native ecosystem and examines how cloud native infrastructure is supporting AI teams as they move from experimentation and training toward production inference.

Cloud native provides a path from AI experimentation to production
The report estimates that China is home to approximately 1.75 million cloud native developers as of Q1 2026, with adoption especially resonating with the country's next generation of developers.
- Professional IIoT developers in China are more likely to be cloud native (48%) than the global average (42%), signifying technical demand for complex deployments.
- Approximately 400,000 AI developers in China are cloud native, underscoring the intersection between the country's cloud native and AI developer ecosystems.
- The global cloud native developer community has reached 19.9 million developers and continues to grow.
- Nearly half (48%) of Chinese backend developers are now classified as cloud native, up from 30% two years ago. Compared to the global rate of 52%, China has rapidly reached the global baseline.
Both China and the global tech community are taking notice of cloud native's role in AI. The report examines how AI developers adopt infrastructure technologies as their workloads mature. Developers follow a distinct cloud native path:
- Data pipeline operations: Kubernetes and microservices provide the foundational infrastructure layer, followed by event-driven architecture, streaming services and observability tools to support sophisticated data pipelines.
- Training and experimentation: Feature flagging, RPC and immutable infrastructure support model version routing, distributed training and reproducible environments.
- Production serving: Service meshes, chaos engineering and multicluster management support traffic splitting, resilience testing and distributed inference at scale.
As AI systems move toward production, specific cloud native practices will continue to support different requirements.
China's new generation of developers embrace cloud native
Similar to recent CNCF and SlashData findings from India, adoption in China is particularly strong among younger developers with more than half of Chinese backend developers under age 45 classified as cloud native. Among backend developers under 25, that figure reaches 58%, suggesting cloud native is embedded in how the next generation builds backend services.
"China's developer ecosystem offers an important view into how cloud native adoption is evolving alongside AI and industrial development," said Liam Bollmann-Dodd, principal market research consultant at SlashData. "The strong adoption among younger backend developers points to cloud native becoming an increasingly established part of modern software development, while our global AI findings show how these infrastructure practices evolve as teams progress toward increasingly sophisticated production AI systems."
Infrastructure becomes more crucial as AI matures
Platform engineering is changing how developers interact with underlying cloud native infrastructure. 88% of backend developers now work with some form of infrastructure standardization, up from 80% six months ago. As platforms abstract technologies such as Kubernetes and containers, the underlying infrastructure can become less visible to developers even as it becomes more critical to production workloads.
At the most advanced levels of cloud native maturity, these practices converge. The report found the strongest technology association in the dataset between immutable infrastructure and chaos engineering, with a lift of 2.22. This means the two are adopted together at more than twice the rate. This "elite cluster" also includes multicluster management and service meshes, which shows how developers who operate complex systems adopt multiple advanced infrastructure practices.
For AI teams, the maturity path looks different. Immutable infrastructure emerges early on to support consistent deployments, while more advanced production environments bring together chaos engineering, service meshes, and multicluster management to support areas like resiliency and distributed inference. As AI becomes deeply embedded in production systems, the data reinforces the growing role of cloud native technologies as the infrastructure base for the AI-native era.
