CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Dec. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The twelfth cohort of the Depot and Arsenal Executive Leadership Program (DAELP) completed its annual immersion residency the week of December 8-12, 2014. The four-and-a-half day trip allowed participants to benchmark commercial and organic industrial base operations on site and conduct a two day value stream mapping exercise which concluded with delivering their findings and recommendations to COL David Luders, Commander, Rock Island Arsenal-Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC) and his leadership team.
DAELP is an executive development program for commanders and senior civilian leaders serving within the United States Military's Industrial Base. Established in 2003 by the U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC), DAELP is organized and administered by the Institute for Defense and Business (IDB) and delivered in conjunction with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School (UNC).
In addition to RIA-JMTC, this residency took the DAELP cohort to John Deere Harvester Works in Illinois; Alcoa Davenport Works in Iowa; Caterpillar's Morton Logistics Center and Caterpillar's Tech Center, both in Illinois; and the Quad Cities Manufacturing Laboratory, located on Rock Island in Illinois. Throughout the week the DAELP cohort enjoyed engagements with both private and public sector leaders on a broad array of issues the cohort members encounter on a regular basis, including:
- the economic challenges facing the commercial and organic industrial base,
- talent management and development,
- improving and managing internal processes and communications,
- and creating a culture dedicated to continuous process improvement.
The two day hands-on exercise took place at RIA-JMTC and focused on continuous process improvement (CPI). The exercise allowed the participants, some of whom have no CPI or Lean Six Sigma background, to understand both the tangible and intangible benefits stemming from Rapid Process Improvement events. Teams worked to develop short-term and long-term action items to improve four Rock Island process challenges: reducing cost, increasing efficiency, saving tax dollars, and enhanced internal communication.
This residency, one of five residencies in the program, is designed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the commercial and organic industrial base, an understanding that can only come from hands-on experience. This could not be achieved without the support of the public and private organizations that open their doors and share their perspectives. The knowledge gained from this experience will aid participants in their remaining residencies and beyond.
