Computer Tablet Check-In Replaces Paperwork For Patients at Virginia Interventional & Vascular Associates
FREDERICKSBURG, Va., June 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Check-in paperwork is becoming a thing of the past for patients at Virginia Interventional & Vascular Associates (VIVA), which has introduced the Phreesia™ check-in system at its practice, said Jennifer Dawson, NP-C, VIVA director. Instead of clipboards with pages of questions, patients are provided computer tablets that they take back to their seats to answer questions electronically.
VIVA joins a growing number of physicians' offices nationwide that are replacing check-in paperwork with electronic check-in, said Ben Betzer, regional director for Phreesia, whose company has installations in all 50 states.
"Our interventional radiology and vascular surgery patients enjoy the fact that all their information is stored for them in a confidential and secure manner, and they do not have to fill out paperwork over and over again," said Dawson, who saw the system demonstrated at a medical conference and brought the idea back to VIVA for evaluation. VIVA is the interventional radiology and vascular surgery practice of Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg.
"Of course, patients still have a paper option if they prefer," Dawson added.
Nationwide, most patients – 81 percent – preferred electronic check-in to paper forms in a survey of patients who used Phreesia in 2011, Betzer said.
Dawson said the tablet's design and electronic prompts make check-in easy and intuitive for most patients. VIVA staff members assist patients who need help in becoming familiar with the system. In fact, the system automatically alerts staff if a patient seems to be taking a long time with the check-in process.
VIVA's system also:
- Interfaces with electronic medical records for more complete patient charts
- Offers medical educational content that patients can view after check-in to better understand their medical conditions
- Provides automatic insurance eligibility checks
- Accepts patient credit card/debit card payments
- Eliminates misunderstandings caused by illegible handwriting
