Congresswoman Shelley Berkley Helps Communities In Schools of Nevada and K.I.D.S. Give Las Vegas Children a Book of Their Own
LAS VEGAS, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Children at the Paiute Indian Reservation received a special visit from Congresswoman Shelley Berkley this afternoon. During the visit, Congresswoman Berkley presented 500 books to the children that were a portion of a major book donation provided by the non-profit organization Kids In Distressed Situations Inc. (K.I.D.S.) as part of a national partnership with Communities In Schools. The local affiliate, Communities In Schools of Nevada, will distribute a total of 10,000 books worth more than $56,000 to students in Clark County.
Having a book is a simple luxury that so many of take for granted. There are thousands of children in the Las Vegas community that do not have any books that they can call their own.
"Books are so important to young children because they help them with developing important language and communication skills," said Communities In Schools of Nevada Executive Director, Louise Helton. "Exposure to books also helps build their imagination and builds their sense of self and how they relate to others. By providing these children with a book that they can take home with them and keep helps to build self esteem by reinforcing that there are adults who care about them," she added.
