Consorzio Alto Adige Wines Announces Completion of 2026 Grape Harvest

Despite an exceptionally hot, dry summer, initial assessments point to healthy grapes, fresh acidity and promising wines across the region

BOLZANO, Italy, Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The Consorzio Alto Adige Wines today announced the completion of the 2026 grape harvest, with initial assessments pointing to a promising vintage across the region, despite an exceptionally hot and dry growing season. Thanks to careful vineyard management and deep experience navigating extreme climate conditions, growers harvest healthy grapes with exceptional freshness and natural acidity.

A warm spring and sustained summer heat led to an earlier-than-ever harvest across the region, beginning around August 10 in Burgraviato, followed by Oltradige and Bassa Atesina in mid-August. Harvesting in and around Bolzano took place in early September, while the cooler Valle Isarco region began on September 1. Although a severe, highly localized hailstorm in Valle Isarco caused crop losses for a small number of growers just days before harvest, the overall regional crop remained healthy and intact.

"The Alto Adige winegrowers and winemakers have already experienced a number of very early and hot vintages over the past two decades and have learnt a great deal. We now know how to protect the grapes from excessive sunlight by pruning the leaves sparingly, when to water them in a targeted manner and, above all, when the right time to harvest is in an extreme year, in order to avoid overripening," said Ivan Giovanett, Winemaker and Director of Viticulture at Castelfeder.

Early cellar impressions for white wines show great promise, characterized by moderate alcohol levels, fresh acidity profiles, and pronounced fruit notes. Chardonnay is expected to perform exceptionally well with ideal sugar content, while Pinot Blanc offers full-bodied elegance. Sauvignon Blanc reflects the warm summer with exotic and tropical notes, and Gewürztraminer displays good body and pronounced aromatics.

The outlook for red wines is equally promising, with early assessments pointing to deep color, structured power, ripe tannins, and long aging potential. Pinot Noir exhibits structure and power, while Lagrein is expected to be dark, full-bodied, and velvety with fine, ripe tannins. Regional specialty Santa Maddalena promises well-rounded wines with pleasant acidity and notes of ripe cherry and plum, while later-ripening varieties like Merlot and Cabernet benefited from cooler temperatures and greater day-to-night temperature variations near the end of the ripening period.

"As far as red wines are concerned, we have rarely had such favourable conditions for producing great, complex and long-lasting wines," said Stefan Kapfinger, cellar master at Cantina Merano Winery. "The red wines are expected to be more intensely coloured, broader, fuller and more robust, and to have good ageing potential. There are many indications that 2026 could be a great vintage for red wines."

With healthy grapes, well-preserved acidity and encouraging early results across both white and red varieties, the 2026 vintage is shaping up to be a standout year for Alto Adige.
