WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., June 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2016, Embodied Labs took top prize at the Creative Startups pitch competition and came away with $25,000 in seed-fund investment. Embodied Labs insightful virtual reality platform is described by Forbes as "entering the life of another" and by the Journal of the American Medical Association as teaching "empathy to medical professionals in an entirely new dimension." Building upon their success, the startup was recently named a finalist for the Department of Education's EdSimChallenge, where they received $50,000 and a chance to compete for $430,000 more this fall.
Creative Startups CEO and Co-founder, Alice Loy, says, "Embodied Labs is revolutionizing the way caregivers and doctors care for their patients. The understanding gained by going through their VR experience will change the way we relate to patients. Empathy VR is the wave of the future." And Creative Startups saw it coming.
Embodied Labs invented a virtual reality platform that gives a visceral experience of a patient's experience. Their first project, The Alfred Lab, is a seven-minute involvement where a learner embodies a 74-year-old man with macular degeneration and high frequency hearing loss. Soon it will include a documentary-style 360 video featuring patients with macular degeneration, a documentary-style 360 video featuring patients with Alzheimer's disease, and another experience where learners can embody a patient with Alzheimer's.
Since 2014, the nonprofit Creative Startups Accelerator has hosted 41 startups that have gone on to raise $9 million in private investment and generate $11 million in new revenues. Most impressively, 90% of their alumni companies are still going strong like Embodied Labs. Funded by the National Science Foundation and others, Creative Startups has disrupted the accelerator market with their rigorous 8-week online course and 1-week Deep Dive designed by current and former Stanford educators. But alumni don't just come away with a sterling education; Creative Startups provides them with world-class mentors, angel and venture investors, and a pitch competition where the top three startups split a pool of $50,000 in seed-stage investment.
