Credentials Solutions Returns To Degree Verification Business With Introduction Of New, Improved Product Line

The new line, dubbed the eduCheck™ family of verification services, marks the return of Credentials Solutions to the degree verification business. Credentials pioneered the introduction of online degree and enrollment verification services in 1998, while setting a national standard for excellence in the field. 

The company left the verification services business in 2008 after a legal dispute led to the sale of that line of business to the National Student Loan Clearinghouse. Following the transaction, Credentials focused its operations on transcript order management services and has since become the largest provider of such services as measured by volume. With its 2015 acquisition of eSCRIP-SAFE, Credentials now provides transcript services to nearly 800 colleges and universities nationwide.

The decision to re-enter the degree verification business was made because Credentials believes the post-secondary education system has been underserved, therefore providing opportunity to improve the level of service offered to both institutions and verifiers. "Since the sale, there has been a failure to improve the underlying technological model for degree and enrollment verification services," said Credentials Solutions CEO Thomas McKechney. "Virtually all services are built upon a 1990's model of sending large files of student data, which creates a security risk when an institution's records are duplicated in multiple locations, thus providing additional opportunities for hackers and identity thieves to compromise data."

Among its many innovations, eduCheck eliminates the need to send large files to service providers, thereby removing the inconvenience of syncing files, an approach that reduces a provider's risk of exposure by 50 percent. This cost-effective solution also promises to reduce verifier fees by as much as 30 percent.

The absence of competition has stifled innovation and customer service and led to pricing strategies designed to keep competition from entering the market. McKechney added, "Higher Education is ready for fresh ideas focused on enhancing the security and process efficiency of verifications. We are committed to taking that market need head-on."

eduCheck will revolutionize the technical and business models for delivering verification services to students, employers, background screening firms, government agencies and others. All verifications will now be done in real-time direct from student information systems and adopt the same RoboRegistrar and web service capabilities Credentials employs in processing academic transcript orders to accept, process and render results for verification requests.
