CTIA-The Wireless Association® Offers Consumer Tips in April

WASHINGTON, April 2, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With Americans spending more time on their wireless devices and using them for more activities than ever before, there is a greater need for consumers to be responsible with their devices and take advantage of safety tools at their disposal. The wireless industry, from carriers to device manufacturers to app and content creators, offers consumers some innovative and helpful services, such as using parental control tools on a child's device, managing voice, text and data usage or downloading an app to remotely "clean" your device if turns up missing. CTIA-The Wireless Association® will offer these kinds of consumer tips throughout the month on its blog (http://blog.ctia.org). In addition, the April "Wonder of Wireless" (WOW) webcast provides tips on how to keep you and your wireless device safe and what to do if it's lost or stolen, and features some consumer applications, such as those used to better integrate appropriate wireless use in the car or helping owners keep track of their pets.

• INSIDER INTERVIEW – The auto industry has embraced wireless America by seamlessly and safely integrating smartphones into a driver's experience. Don Butler, Vice President of Cadillac, describes CUE (Cadillac User Experience), which allows drivers to focus on the road while conveniently and safely interacting with their cars' features and wireless devices. This includes using voice commands to control the car's functions, accessing music and making hands-free calls.
• POLICY POINT – Keeping you and your wireless device safe is important to CTIA and its members. This segment offers safety tips and stresses the importance of using the tools currently available to protect yourself in the event your device is lost or stolen. Advice includes using passwords, tracking and data safety applications and notifying your carrier immediately if your device is lost or stolen.
• WIRELESS AT WORK – Dave Vigil, President of Snaptracs, Inc., introduces Tagg the Pet Tracker, a device that allows pet owners to know the location of their dog or cat anytime and anywhere. The lightweight device attaches to pet's collar and transmits its GPS location to the owner's computer or smartphone. The service can also notify the owner by email or text message when the pet strays outside of a predetermined zone. 
• WIRELESS LIFESAVER – With more than 17,000 medical apps available, consumers are using these instructive apps to help save lives. CTIA offers two inspiring examples. In the first segment, basketball coach Eric Cooper talks about his nightmarish situation when one of his players collapsed and wasn't responsive during a game. Thankfully, Coach Cooper had downloaded a CPR app that provided step-by-step instructions so he could properly administer CPR and revive the student. Next, San Ramon California Fire Chief Richard Price explains why his department created the free "Fire Department" app, which alerts first aid trained individuals of nearby emergencies so they can help save lives. Originally offered only in San Ramon area, the renamed app, PulsePoint, will be available to more cities across the country.
