DataMotion Files Provisional Patent for Technology that Enables Easy and Secure Doctor-Patient Email Interaction

The solution, which takes a new approach to digital certificates and S/MIME messaging, overcomes major obstacles to the adoption of secure email in healthcare. In particular, it pertains to The Direct Project, a national effort to drive efficiency in the exchange of healthcare information, spearheaded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, and promoted by the Obama administration under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The Direct Project is based on digital certificates and S/MIME, which provides a secure, standards-based foundation for encrypted messaging. However, its adoption faces significant hurdles due to complexity for users and scalability. To exchange messages through this system, participants such as providers, medical systems and patients must first sign up and be configured to use new Direct email addresses. The magnitude of this challenge becomes evident when applied to the U.S. healthcare system, where more than 200 million adult citizens - and the majority of providers and medical systems - do not yet have Direct-enabled accounts, preventing them from securely exchanging messages.

To address these issues, DataMotion Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Bob Janacek, has filed a provisional patent titled "Method and Apparatus for Securely Communicating Using Public/Private Keys" that automates the creation and management of digital certificates, making it simple for doctors and patients to communicate over email in a secure, compliant way. Once this technology is in place, any time a physician attempts to send an email using The Direct Project, the message will be securely sent via the existing S/MIME method, regardless of whether or not the recipient is enrolled in the system. This allows physicians to get on with their work without introducing disruptions.
