Defence IQ Survey Results: 96% Think Developments in Arctic Governance Demand Improvements to Patrol & Reconnaissance

Defence IQ recently commissioned a wide-ranging survey of those responsible for developing, commanding and delivering patrol and reconnaissance capability in the Arctic region, examining the key challenges facing regional nations. In this survey, Defence IQ identified that 96% agree that developments in Arctic governance demand improvements to existing patrol & reconnaissance capability. According to 36% of those surveyed, the most pressing issue to overcome in improving Arctic surveillance is limited ground base infrastructure, and that UAVs and high resolution imaging are most critical for improving Arctic reconnaissance. 54% feel that UAVs will play a very significant role in the future of delivering Arctic reconnaissance.
In terms of challenges, 58% said system integrators being required to develop connectivity is the biggest challenge when it comes to gathering data from multiple sensors.
82% believe that domain awareness can be improved by increasing the deployment of unmanned sensors and 49% think the technology is available but not adapted for use in the Arctic prevents the integration of these unmanned platforms.
Looking forward to 2020, 46% think the most critical factor influencing Arctic security will be increased economic activity, including resource extraction and tourism.
