A newer 2025 systematic review in The American Journal of Medicine analyzed 23 randomized controlled trials involving 1,474 participants taking oral collagen supplements for skin aging. Across all 23 trials, researchers found improvements in skin elasticity, hydration, and wrinkles. However, when they separated the studies by funding source, trials without pharmaceutical-company funding showed no significant benefits, while funded studies did. High-quality studies likewise found no significant effects across the measured outcomes.

That does not mean collagen supplements definitively do nothing. It means the quality and source of the evidence materially change the answer.

Best Collagen for Skin: What That Is the Wrong Question

The evidence does not establish a single best collagen for skin. In fact, studies have examined different collagen sources, formulations, and treatment periods, so it is difficult to determine whether differences in results are due to the collagen itself or other factors.

A 2019 review in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology found preliminary evidence that oral collagen supplementation may improve skin elasticity and hydration, while noting the need for further research into optimal formulations and dosing.
