Dr. Jack Cox Named Chief Medical Officer For St. Joseph Health
Renowned quality champion to help lead 16-hospital system in achieving outstanding medical outcomes
IRVINE, Calif., April 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Jack L. Cox, MD, who has led organizations to achieve national prominence for best-in-field outcomes and patient care, has been named the new senior vice president and chief medical officer of St. Joseph Health, a leading Catholic not-for-profit health care system serving California, Texas and New Mexico.
Dr. Cox currently serves as senior vice president and chief quality officer at Hoag, St. Joseph Health's affiliated partner in Southern California. In his new position with the St. Joseph Health system, Dr. Cox will focus on three interdependent areas: helping St. Joseph Health work more closely with physician leadership; creating a shared, system-wide roadmap for clinical excellence and expertise in population health; and guiding the evolution of care delivery systems to ensure excellent care, an outstanding patient experience and widespread access to health services. Dr. Cox will work with the executive vice presidents of each St. Joseph Health region, leadership of St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare (the health system's medical groups and physician networks) and physician leadership and clinical teams.

In the past 25 years, Dr. Cox has achieved an extraordinary track record of clinical excellence and innovation. A leader at Hoag since 2006, Dr. Cox led performance / quality improvement, had strategic and operational responsibility for Hoag's six clinical institutes, as well as oversight of the development of physician engagement models, the medical staff office, Hoag Institute for Research and Education, infection prevention, patient safety and regulatory compliance. He was a founding board director of Hoag Orthopedic Institute. In the next several weeks, Hoag will work to identify leaders who will carry on his extensive efforts.
From 1999-2005, Dr. Cox was the chief medical officer of Premier Inc., a national alliance of 2,000 non-profit hospitals and health systems, specializing in group purchasing, supply chain, clinical performance improvement and healthcare informatics. Under his leadership, Premier implemented a national performance improvement model that led to the Premier Hospital Quality Improvement Demonstration project in partnership with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and, in 2005, was on the executive team influential in Premier receiving the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2006.
Dr. Cox also implemented extensive outpatient quality measures and developed a family practice residency program while serving as a regional medical director for Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Utah.
A board certified family physician, Dr. Cox is a fellow of the American Board of Family Practice and the American College of Physician Executives. He holds a master's degree in medical management from Tulane University and was named one of Becker's Top 100 CMO's to know in 2014.
