Drummer Cindy Blackman and Her Band, Another Lifetime, Have Upcoming Dates at Blues Alley in Washington, DC and (Le) Poisson Rouge in NYC

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 3, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Beginning this week, virtuoso jazz-rock drummer Cindy Blackman will perform a string of East coast dates with her band, Another Lifetime.

The itinerary kicks off with four nights of shows—Thursday, November 4 through Saturday, November 7—at Blues Alley in Washington, DC.  Next up, Blackman and her band will perform on Wednesday, November 10 at (Le) Poisson Rouge, the multi-media venue founded by musicians on the site of the historic Village Gate in New York City's Greenwich Village.  The line up for Blackman's band Another Lifetime is: Aurelien Budynek, guitar; Marc Cary; keyboards; and Felix Pastorius, bass

Most recently, Blackman was part of the stellar, multi-generational jazz lineup performing "Bitches Brew Revisited"—honoring the legendary Miles Davis' seminal album—at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts on October 29.  The one-night-only event, which saluted the legacy of Bitches Brew on the 40th anniversary of its release, was a highlight of the 28th annual San Francisco Jazz Festival, produced and presented by SFJAZZ.

Blackman performed in a production of the show last January at the NYC Winter JazzFest as well, and the New York Times' Ben Ratliff wrote, "...in Bitches Brew Revisited, a septet led by the cornetist Graham Haynes, powered by the drummer Cindy Blackman and colored by the guitarist James Blood Ulmer, jazz became whatever it was Miles Davis intended in 1969: spacious, black-magic stealth funk."  

Also in 2010, Blackman released her most recent album, Another Lifetime, on Four Quarters Entertainment.  The project—Blackman's first recording as a leader since 2005's Music For The New Millennium—is a tribute to her mentor, legendary drummer Tony Williams.  Her tour de force set collects many of Williams' songs from his seminal group Lifetime, which he helmed from 1969-1976.  In its review, All About Jazz wrote, "Putting aside preconceived notions of what Tony Williams' Lifetime might sound like in 2010, Blackman's sonic explorations take jazz-rock beyond where the late drummer envisioned it when he was putting heads to bed with guitarist John McLaughlin, bassist Jack Bruce and organist Larry Young…Jazz-rock as performed by Williams, and now Blackman, is very much alive and well."

Earlier this year, Blackman—who has recorded and toured extensively with Lenny Kravitz, and played with a wide range of artists including Pharoah Sanders, Cassandra Wilson, and Bill Laswell—performed at a number of dates on Santana's Universal Tone Tour.  In July, her engagement to Carlos Santana was announced.
