Durgin Park restaurant memorabilia to be auctioned by Central Mass Auctions
BOSTON, Feb. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Advertising signs and other memorabilia from the recently closed Durgin Park restaurant will be offered to the public by Central Mass Auctions, Inc. A preview will take place at the restaurant on Saturday, February 16 and Sunday, February 17 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Online bidding ends on February 20.
Durgin Park was the second oldest restaurant in Boston, and one of the oldest in the country. It was opened by John Durgin, Eldridge Park, and John Chandler in 1827. The restaurant served traditional New England dishes including Yankee pot roast, Boston baked beans and Cape Cod seafood. It was well known for its sassy waitresses and their playful give and take with customers.
Auctioneer Wayne Tuiskula of Central Mass Auctions, states that, like other area residents, he was disappointed to see the landmark restaurant close. However, he is pleased that Central Mass Auctions has been contracted to offer the collection of historical memorabilia. The public now has the opportunity to purchase mementoes from this landmark restaurant that many local residents and visitors from around the world fondly remember.
Many nostalgic items are being offered in the auction, including the Clinton Street entrance sign with a brass plaque featuring the "Just a boy" poem. The poem was said to have been added to every menu after the death of John Chandler's grandson, Jerry, during World War I. A folk art carved wooden pig dated 1879 is also among the important items being offered. Over 200 items will be sold.
