E Cigarette Registry Launched by Bernstein Liebhard LLP to Track Adverse Events Potentially Associated with Electronic Cigarettes

NEW YORK, Aug. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Bernstein Liebhard LLP has launched a new E Cigarette Registry (http://www.ecigregistry.com/) to track adverse events potentially associated with the use of electronic cigarettes. The Firm invites visitors to ecigregistry.com to report serious health issues they suspect were caused by exposure to E Cigarettes, including hospitalizations for:

• Nicotine poisoning
• Pneumonia
• Heart attack
• Stroke
• Atrial fibrillation
• Congestive heart failure
• Burns from E Cigarette explosions

E Cigarette Health Problems

According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), E Cigarettes have not been fully studied, so their potential risks and benefits are not completely understood. It is also unclear how much nicotine or other harmful chemicals are being inhaled during their use. Finally, it's not known if electronic cigarettes will lead young people to try other tobacco products, including conventional cigarettes.

According to an analysis that appeared in the April 3^rd issue of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the number of calls to poison centers involving E Cigarette liquids containing nicotine rose from one per month in September 2010 to 215 per month in February 2014. More than half of the calls to poison centers due to electronic cigarettes involved young children under age 5, and about 42 percent of the poison calls involved people age 20 and older

In April 2014, Reuters reported that the number of complaints made to the FDA involving E Cigarettes had spiked over the prior year. Between March 2013 and 2014, the agency logged at least 50 such complaints. The FDA had received roughly the same number of reports during the previous five years combined. Some of the adverse events reported to the agency included serious heart and respiratory problems, as well as burns and nicotine toxicity.

According to the FDA, it also regularly receives adverse event reports relating to electronic cigarettes, including incidents of hospitalizations for pneumonia, congestive heart failure and other issues.* In April, the agency proposed new regulations that would extend its regulatory authority to cover additional products that meet the legal definition of a tobacco product, including E Cigarettes. Because of the interest in this issue, the FDA extended the public comment period on its proposal to August 8, 2014.
