PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., April 20, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Jeffrey C. Lerner, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer, ECRI Institute, has been selected as one of Becker's Hospital Review's "50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety for 2016." The prestigious award is given annually to 50 top patient safety leaders who are champions for improving patient safety.
"This award is far more for our organization and those who work with us than it is for me, though, naturally, I am flattered to be recognized," states Lerner. "Patient safety is at the heart of our mission and we work hard to improve it worldwide."
Founded in 1968, ECRI Institute, an independent nonprofit organization that focuses on the safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness of healthcare, has been a pioneer in patient safety. Recent milestones include the development of national patient safety learning programs.
In 2008, ECRI Institute was named one of the first federally designated Patient Safety Organizations by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ECRI Institute PSO has experience analyzing more than 1.2 million patient safety reports and collaborating on safe practices. By disseminating their shared learnings from analysis of these events, ECRI Institute PSO has achieved extraordinary contributions towards making care safer.
ECRI Institute PSO's data analytics on health IT-related events provided special insight into the need for a national health IT safety partnership. In 2014, ECRI Institute convened The Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety, a private sector initiative that aims to develop an effective national framework for assuring patient safety in health IT through a collaborative multi-stakeholder effort.
The Partnership released its first safe practice recommendations, Health IT Safe Practices: Toolkit on the Safe Use of Copy and Paste, at HIMSS16. The toolkit and an evidence report are available for free to the public.
Also, as a free public service, ECRI organizes an annual conference on the use of evidence in policy and practice. This year's 23rd annual conference, Health Systems and Addiction: The Use and Misuse of Legal Substances, will be held November 16 and 17, 2016, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC. It is co-planned and co-sponsored with government agencies and departments and nonprofit organizations that share ECRI's drive for evidence-informed action.
ECRI disseminates a great deal of its patient safety research for free to the public through annual top 10 reports, e-newsletters, and resource centers which can be accessed in our Patient Safety Center.
Becker's Hospital Review's top 50 patient safety leaders list features clinicians, advocates and legislators whose work helps to eliminate medical errors and improve safety in the industry. It has been published since 2013. Honorees are chosen from a combination of nominations, editorial research, and discretion.
