Elekta Recognizes Best Paper Award Recipients and Cancer Registry of the Year at NCRA Education Conference

SAN FRANCISCO, May 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- At the National Cancer Registrars Association's (NCRA) 39^th Annual Education Conference in San Francisco, Elekta joined the Journal of Registry Management (JRM) to announce recipients of the Elekta / JRM Best Paper Award. Elekta and JRM, the official journal of NCRA, collaborate on this award to recognize exemplary work in the cancer registration field.

Published in the fall 2012 issue of JRM, the Elekta Award for Journal of Registry Management: Best Paper of the Year 2012 went to "Evaluating Factors Associated with Unknown SEER Summary Stage 2000 Derived from Collaborative Stage at Central Registry Level." Co-authors of the paper are: Mei-Chin Hsieh, MSPH, CTR; Qingzhao Yu, PhD; Xiao-Cheng Wu, MD, MPH, CTR; Brad Wohler, MS; Ying Fan, MS; Baozhen Qiao, PhD; Ahmedin Jemal, DVM, PhD; Umed A. Ajani, MBBS, MPH.

The 2012 Honorable Mention was awarded to "Coding of Specific Subgroups of Myelodysplastic Syndromes in a Population-Based Cancer Registry: Prospects for Improvement," which was published in the fall 2012 issue of JRM. Anthony P. Polednak, PhD and Cathryn Phillips, CTRb co-authored this paper.

Morgantown, West Virginia's WVU Healthcare Cancer Registry team was recognized as Registry of the Year.

The WVU registrars have worked together closely for several years, achieving recognition as experts in the field of cancer registry by ACOS Commission on Cancer, WVUH Cancer Program, WVCRA state association of Cancer Registrars, and WVCR state cancer registry. Subjects of expertise include abstraction, standard compliance, technology, research and international research.  Of note, the WVU registry staff has also spread its influence on an international level, working with Kenyan registrars on registry functions and the complications of abstraction of cases in Nairobi, through the influence of HIV and other disease processes.
