Elizabeth Waterman's Photography Featured in Paris Exhibition "Sex and Politics"
PARIS, Oct. 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Art-Icon is proud to announce the inclusion of acclaimed photographer Elizabeth Waterman in the upcoming independent exhibition Sex and Politics, held alongside Paris Photo in the Bastille district of Paris. The exhibition explores the intersections of sexuality, representation, and power in contemporary photography, presenting works that challenge societal perceptions and highlight the political dimensions of intimacy.
Waterman's selected work, Table Dance, Sam's Hofbrau, Downtown Los Angeles, California, 2019, originates from her celebrated 2019 book MONEYGAME. The photograph offers a candid, documentary-style perspective of sex work, capturing the subject with dignity, complexity, and artistic nuance. MONEYGAME sold out within six months and was published by XYZ Publishing out of Lisbon, celebrated as being the "female gaze."
Sex and Politics features a curated international roster of artists including Joel-Peter Witkin, Mark Seliger, Roger Ballen, Antoine d'Agata, and Nadia Tolokonnikova (P**** Riot), with exhibition text by philosopher Slavoj Žižek. The exhibition will occupy more than 1,000 m² in a historic 19th-century building in the Bastille district, blending early modern architecture with contemporary exhibition design.
Curator Danila Tkachenko explains:
"Sexuality is not simply a matter of private pleasure or personal freedom — it is an arena where ideological assumptions, social hierarchies, and symbolic power are negotiated. Elizabeth Waterman's work embodies this intersection, merging documentary rigor with a powerful artistic vision."
Waterman's forthcoming series Propulsion is debuting at Photo London 2026. Shot entirely on 35mm and 120mm film without post-production effects, the series juxtaposes erotic dancers with jellyfish, examining the kinship between pole artistry and marine movement — urging viewers to reconsider conventions around eroticism and performance.
Opening Reception: November 13, 2025, at 7:00 PM
Exhibition Dates: November 13–16, 2025
Venue: 74 Bd Richard-Lenoir, 75011 Paris, France
