Emdeon Certified as a Health Data Intermediary by the Minnesota Department of Health
First ePrescribing entity authorized to provide secure health information exchange for Minnesota patients
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Emdeon Inc., a leading provider of healthcare revenue and payment cycle management and clinical information exchange solutions, is now certified as a Health Data Intermediary (HDI) by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDOH). Emdeon is the first ePrescribing entity to be certified as an HDI and the second company overall to earn this level of authority under the Minnesota Health Information Exchange Oversight Program.
As the single largest financial and administrative information exchange in the U.S. healthcare system, Emdeon offers advanced capabilities to facilitate Minnesota's healthcare information exchange (HIE) initiative and is committed to working with Minnesota and other states to advance their health information technology objectives. Emdeon currently facilitates over five billion healthcare information exchanges each year through its network which reaches approximately 500,000 physicians, 81,000 dentists, 60,000 pharmacies, 5,000 hospitals, 1,200 payers and 150 labs.
"Our certification in Minnesota reflects Emdeon's strong focus on providing leading clinical information exchange solutions that are designed to be secure for even the most sensitive information," states Rick Sage, vice president of clinical services for Emdeon. "By combining healthcare information exchange services with consolidated electronic lab ordering, results distribution and ePrescribing, Emdeon helps healthcare providers cut costs and increase productivity."
In the future, Emdeon's data exchange infrastructure will include a record locator service to allow secure patient tracking and reconciliation in near real time with proper patient consent. This virtual patient view will be populated with data from Emdeon's clinical information network that today processes over 150 million clinical and ePrescribing information exchanges per year. Through Emdeon's health information network, authorized healthcare providers will be able to retrieve a patient's medication history or other clinical information via a single query of Emdeon's vast data resources and receive results in near real time.
Additionally, Emdeon has been integrally involved in the development of solutions and standards for the electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS). As the only ePrescribing network with market-based experience in transmitting EPCS, Emdeon through its eRx Network is already demonstrating the achievability of EPCS and its potential impact on healthcare.
With the HDI certification, Emdeon is authorized to operate in Minnesota as an HIE service provider. Healthcare providers, hospitals and other participating entities in Minnesota may partner with Emdeon to enable standards of data transmission to meet applicable state requirements. The Minnesota eHealth initiative is a public-private collaborative whose vision is to accelerate the adoption and use of health information technology in order to improve healthcare quality, increase patient safety, reduce healthcare costs and improve public health. Minnesota has been a leader in pursuing bold e-health policies and applying statutory mandates and governmental funding to accelerate the adoption of HIT, electronic health records and health data standards.
