New Spark Energy mobile website and app put power in consumers' pockets

HOUSTON, Sept. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers can now shop for their home's energy needs and discover new ways to reduce their energy usage anytime, anywhere, with a new mobile website and app launched by electricity and natural gas retailer Spark Energy.

"One of the key drivers to putting out a mobile website and app was that access to our current website from mobile devices had increased by more than 400 percent year-over-year. At the same time, we didn't just want to give people another way to view and pay their bills. We tried to create a more robust, useful experience for customers and non-customers alike," says Phil Tonge, President of Spark Energy. "Our mobile experience is not just another way to collect payments – it's a place to find the tools, information and the electricity and natural gas plans you need any time, any place."

Mobile Website Features

  • Spark Energy's entire website, optimized for the mobile experience
  • Shop electricity and natural gas plans
  • Sign up for service
  • Discover energy-saving tips
  • Get answers to commonly asked questions
  • Find outage and emergency numbers

Mobile App Features

  • Manage your account (Texas only)
  • Make payments (Texas only)
  • Calculate electricity usage
  • Read up on the latest Spark Energy blog
  • Share experiences
  • Give feedback
  • Play games

"Energy is not always a subject on people's minds, but it can have a big effect on your lifestyle and your wallet," says Tonge. "With the Spark Energy mobile app and website, you can learn more about your energy options and discover new ways to save money on your energy bills when it's convenient for you, without being tied to a computer."

With smartphone usage on the rise, many companies are scrambling to create mobile websites and apps to make sure people can still interact with them on-the-go from mobile devices. That's probably no surprise, given that smartphones are already outselling desktop and notebook computers combined, according to the Top Mobile Internet Trends report by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

And the trend is only going to grow. Oppenheimer & Co. reports that 75 percent of U.S. consumers will have smartphones in the next five years.

It's especially important for companies to create mobile apps and mobile versions of websites since the way most conventional websites are designed is not mobile-friendly –  that is, they don't display well on mobile devices like smart phones.

Spark Energy points out that both its mobile app and website are compatible with the latest versions of iPhone, Android and BlackBerry devices.
