The EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework was designed by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the European Commission to provide companies on both sides of the Atlantic with a mechanism to comply with EU data protection requirements when transferring personal data from the European Union to the United States in support of transatlantic commerce.

The United States Department of Commerce began accepting Privacy Shield applications on August 1st 2016. The names of the first group of organizations that have been deemed compliant with the Privacy Shield agreement were released on August 12th by the International Trade Administration, an office of the U.S. Commerce Department. eTrigue Corporation, Salesforce.com. Workday Inc. and Microsoft Corp. are among the first 34 companies listed on the Privacy Shield website as having been deemed compliant.

Certified companies must agree to comply with the agreement's data-protection rules and seven key principles:

  • Notice
  • Choice
  • Accountability for Onward Transfer
  • Security
  • Data Integrity and Purpose Limitation
  • Access
  • Recourse, Enforcement and Liability
