Exar and Wurth Elektronik Deliver Ready-to-Use Low Power Point of Load Solution Design Kit

FREMONT, Calif. and WALDENBURG, Germany, May 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Exar Corporation (Nasdaq: EXAR) and Wurth Elektronik announced today a low power point of load solution design kit featuring  a complete range of synchronous low voltage single and dual-channel step-down converters.  The kit provides system architects the opportunity to quickly test the latest step-down converters and lowest profile inductors for applications such as audio-video equipment, portable and non-portable instrumentation and, more generally, any low power point of loads.

Design Kit Overview

This design kit provides single and dual-channel point of load solutions from Exar through a choice of four proven and ready to use fully integrated synchronous step-down converters. Four individual evaluation boards demonstrate various point of load's output current capabilities of 600mA to 1.5A per channel.   System architects can further optimize their design with a variety of inductors from Wurth which is also included in the design kit. The selection of inductor offers various typical values and profiles, including the latest lowest profile options, to precisely tailor the power conversion stage for performance and ultra compact designs.

Key Product Features

The kit includes Exar's SP6669, XRP6658, XRP6668 and XRP6657 evaluation boards capable of delivering from 600mA to 1.5A per channel. Supporting a 2.5V to 5.5V input voltage range traditional of Lithium-Ion battery operated portable applications, these PWM converters are capable of achieving conversion efficiencies as high as 97% with an adjustable output voltage as low as 0.6V. The XRP6658 and XRP6668 implements a Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) mode for improved light load efficiencies achieving better than 90% across the full output current range.
