KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- To help Joplin, Mo. on its long road to recovery from the May 22 tornado, 140 Lockton Associates and friends will build homes and fix a school playground in a two-day flurry of activity Oct. 28-29.
The volunteer team will build two homes in two days, starting from bare concrete pad sites. The project is being coordinated through Relief Spark, a local not-for-profit whose goal is to rebuild 50 homes in 50 weeks in Joplin.
"The stories of pain and survival are both heartbreaking and inspiring," said Mark Henderson, Chief Operating Officer of Lockton's Kansas City Property and Casualty operations. "Since the storm first struck, Lockton Associates have been generous in donating supplies and funds. Now, we are providing a team to do what Joplin residents tell us they need most: help in rebuilding."
The Lockton rebuild project will provide homes for the Larry and Amy Jump family and Megan Snider. The Jump family of five, survived the F5 tornado by huddling under a blanket in their basement. Amy Jump says, "I thank God every day that he kept all of us safe in our little corner."
In addition, the Lockton team will repair and paint the playground equipment at Duquesne Elementary School where students from Emerson Elementary School now attend. Emerson was destroyed in the tornado, and Lockton has adopted four of the classrooms from Emerson.
