Fashion's Night Out at Anthropologie

NEW YORK, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- On September 10th, specialty retailer Anthropologie will host one of Fashion's Night Out's more spectacular events at its Chelsea Market location in Manhattan.  Artist Jim Denevan will create one of his colossal landscape drawings on the street, outside the store.  Half of Ninth Avenue (between 15th and 16th streets) will be closed to facilitate the one night only event, when, live and in person, the artist will create a near block-long drawing on a New York street.

Recently, Denevan was critically lauded for completing the world's largest ever drawing in Siberia on the frozen surface of Lake Baikal.  The nine square mile artwork was commissioned by The Anthropologist, an online exhibition space and non-commercial venue for cultural projects underwritten by Anthropologie.  The experience of creating that artwork is now available for viewing online at www.theanthropologist.net.

Beginning at 6pm on Friday, September 10th, the artist will be inside the store surrounded by images of his Siberian adventure.  The first 100 lucky shoppers will have the chance to receive one-of-a-kind tote bags created on the spot by the artist who is famous for his freehand geometric drawing ability.  At 8pm, Denevan will venture outside to begin his nearly block-long street drawing which will be filmed from overhead and simultaneously projected on the 15th Street side of the Anthropologie store.   The artwork itself will be on a large-scale canvas, and painted on the street over the course of three hours.  New Yorkers from all walks of life are expected to witness some portion or all of the creation.

Known for his large-scale artworks on stretches of bare sand and dry lakebeds that are akin to crop circles in their astonishing size and symmetry, Denevan has also gained renown as the founder of Outstanding in the Field, a nomadic series of outdoor feasts that are part art-installation and part celebration of the bounty of small farms across the globe. For Denevan, the Lake Baikal project marked a continuation of his "compositions in time and space" that allow him to both "work outside and make geometry".

Fashion's Night Out is a collaboration among American Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company and the City of New York.  On the night of September 10th over 1,000 New York City retailers will remain open until 11pm to welcome shoppers.
