DENVER, Jan. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Leading event cinema distributor Fathom Events has revealed that 26 of its titles grossed over $1M each at the box office in 2017. This statistic sets a new record and is a significant achievement over the company's 2016 box office success of 14 titles passing this threshold, further demonstrating the increasing value and audience interest in event cinema. Fathom Events is currently ranked as the 13th largest distributor of content in North America to movie theaters in 2017, according to comScore.
The record-breaking 26 cinema events included nine live performances of the Metropolitan Opera, classic films "The Princess Bride" and "Singin' in the Rain," anime title "Princess Mononoke" and the box-office knockout "Mayweather vs McGregor," which became the highest-grossing sports event in Fathom's history. Six of the 26 titles grossed over $2M, led by top stage production "Disney's Newsies: The Broadway Musical" with $4.7 million and followed by faith-based documentaries "Is Genesis History" with $2.7 million, "In Our Hands: The Battle for Jerusalem" with $2.5 million, "Pokémon The Movie: I Choose You!" with $2.4 million, the Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing match with $2.6 million, and "Jeepers Creepers 3" with $2.2 million.
"Our accomplishments at the box office last year highlight the evolution and importance of event cinema as an industry, the strength of our distribution and the growing consumer interest in the variety of unique cinema events that Fathom offers," said Fathom Events CEO Ray Nutt. "We will use our success to continue growing our core verticals and also to focus on more live events, cultural events and experiment with new content offerings, solidifying our spot in the industry alongside major studios."
