WASHINGTON, July 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02) will address 1,800 GEAR UP educators from across the country on Monday, July 20, in San Francisco, California. GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is the nation's most successful college readiness program and, in its 16 year history, has operated in 48 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia. Fattah will discuss his continued efforts to champion GEAR UP and other college access programs in Congress, and his recent success in securing an additional $22 million in funding for GEAR UP in the FY 16 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill.
The annual GEAR UP conference brings together GEAR UP staff, teachers, counselors, and administrators from K-12 and post-secondary schools. The conference is sponsored by the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP) in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education. GEAR UP serves students as early as 6th grade and uses a cohort model to create a college-going culture in collaboration with schools, colleges, and nonprofits within each community.
Fattah introduced and helped pass the legislation for GEAR UP early in his Congressional career; the program was signed into law by President Clinton in 1998. Since the program's establishment, it has received $4.8 billion in federal funds and served more than 13 million students nationwide.
In Philadelphia, GEAR UP supports programming for more than 5,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia. Last fall, the Department of Education awarded Philadelphia $29 million in GEAR UP funds over a seven-year period. The funding will help sustain and grow the district's GEAR UP programs at 11 area high schools and 35 feeder elementary schools.
