6–80 inch inspection range, tool-battery power, 10× optical zoom and groundwater inflow sensing bring mainline CCTV capability beyond truck-accessible locations
WINNIPEG, MB, Nov. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- FIBERSCOPE today announced North American availability of the STORMER X Municipal Grade Pipe Crawler, a portable CCTV inspection platform built for municipal sewer mains, storm drains, culverts and industrial pipelines from 6 to 80 inches (DN150–2000).
The system addresses a practical limitation in conventional mainline CCTV inspection: the inspection equipment may be capable of surveying the pipe, while the vehicle carrying it cannot always reach the access point.
Backyard easements, rough terrain, parking structures, remote culverts, and industrial facilities can all complicate vehicle access in the inspection process.
STORMER X takes a different approach. Its crawler, motorized reel, and control tablet are combined into a wheeled platform that crews can move from a pickup or service vehicle directly to the inspection location.
Key STORMER X capabilities
- 6–80 inch pipe range with configurable wheel sets
- Full HD pan-and-tilt camera with 10× optical and 12× digital zoom
- Electric camera elevator for centering the view in larger pipes
- Groundwater inflow detection included in both Base and Advanced configurations
- Two commercial tool-battery power with configured interfaces for major battery brands
- 110–240 V AC operation for vehicle-based installations
- 656 ft Base / 984 ft Advanced cable lengths, configurable up to 1,650 ft
- Laser diameter, ovality, crack and object measurement with the Advanced Set
- Optional lateral launch for 8–48 inch mains and 4–12 inch laterals
Rethinking the Role of the CCTV Truck
Dedicated CCTV trucks remain an efficient option for inspection programs where crews can drive directly from manhole to manhole.
STORMER X is designed for the jobs where that assumption breaks down.
Instead of requiring the crawler system to remain tied to a dedicated vehicle, crews can roll the inspection platform into areas that may be difficult or impossible to reach with a full-size truck.
"The important question is not whether a CCTV truck is useful. It is whether every inspection requires one," FIBERSCOPE said. "STORMER X gives utilities and contractors another operating model: bring municipal-grade crawler capability to the access point instead of designing every job around vehicle access."
The portable system can run from two configured commercial tool batteries, such as DeWalt or Milwaukee packs already used by many field crews. AC power is also available for permanent van or truck installations.
More Than Video Inspection
STORMER X is designed to collect additional condition data during the CCTV survey.
A groundwater inflow sensor is included with both configurations. The system records groundwater entering the pipeline and plots inflow against inspection distance, helping crews identify affected joints and pipe sections during inflow and infiltration investigations.
For measured condition assessment, the Advanced Set adds lasers to determine pipe diameter, ovality, crack width, and object width.
The Full HD camera provides 1920 × 1080 video at 30 fps, autofocus, 10× optical zoom, and 12× digital zoom. An electric camera lift helps position the camera closer to the centerline of a large-diameter pipe.
Reporting From the Same Inspection Platform
The system includes a rugged control tablet and a lifetime license for IKAM inspection software.
Operators can code defects, plot inclination, create inspection reports, and export data for downstream engineering workflows. Agencies with specific coding requirements can confirm the appropriate reporting configuration with FIBERSCOPE before ordering.
STORMER X is designed and manufactured by Zikmund Electronics in the European Union and configured for the North American market. FIBERSCOPE provides quotations, warranty administration, parts, technical assistance, and service for customers in the United States and Canada.
