Fifth Annual 5K Run for the Future to Benefit the Radiation Oncology Institute Breaks Attendance, Donation Records

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Over 200 runners participated in the fifth annual 5K Run for the Future to Benefit the Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI), hosted by Radiation Business Solutions. This year the event was held at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. 

"Donations are still coming in," said Dan Moore, CEO of Radiation Business Solutions,
"but at this point, through registrations and corporate sponsorships, we have raised over $70,000 for the ROI this year. This surpasses last year's record of $24,000 and brings the total amount raised for the ROI over the past five years to just over $150,000."

This year the event was also sponsored by Elekta Inc., Varian Medical Systems, AE Design, and Northwest Medical Physics Center.  

The run is held yearly on the Monday morning of the annual conference of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), and attracts physicians, medical students, and other industry leaders. The male winner was Matt McCurdy, M.D., PhD., of the Marshfield Clinic with a time of 15:52. The female winner was Megan Daly, M.D., of the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, with a time of 18:55. 

New this year was the "Academic Team Challenge." Six academic institutions signed up to compete for a $1,000 academic scholarship. The top three runners' times from each team were averaged for a Total Team Time. Team Mayo Clinic won the challenge with the fastest Total Team Time of 20:35.
