Former ABC Daytime Drama Writer Robyn Hatcher Brings an "Editing" Approach to Workplace Communication
Communication strategist introduces the EDIT Method™ as leaders navigate AI, reorganization, rapid change and the human dynamics that come with them
NEW YORK, Sept. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- What does writing a soap opera have to do with leading through workplace change?
More than most leaders might think.
Robyn Hatcher, CSP, communication strategist and former writer for ABC's All My Children and One Life to Live, is bringing lessons from the writers' room into today's workplace with the EDIT Method™, a communication framework designed to help leaders recognize and rewrite the assumptions, reactions and communication patterns that can derail collaboration.
The four-part method asks leaders to Examine what is fact versus assumption, Decode communication styles and emotional triggers, Identify the gap between intention and impact, and Translate the message into language the other person can actually hear.
"On a soap opera, we had something called a Show Bible — the history, motivations and backstory that helped explain why every character behaved the way they did," Hatcher says. "Workplaces have show bibles, too. They're just rarely written down. They're made up of beliefs, expectations, old experiences and stories about how people are supposed to behave."
Those invisible scripts become particularly important during periods of change, when new technology, restructuring, shifting roles and uncertainty can amplify assumptions and misunderstandings.
Hatcher calls the potential payoff ROR — Return on the Rewrite™: what becomes possible when leaders stop automatically reacting to the existing story and become more intentional about the one they are creating next.
Hatcher will bring these ideas to two HR audiences in September. On September 16, she will present "Your Workplace Is a Soap Opera. Who's Writing the Script?" at DisruptHR Denver. Later that month, she will present "The Communication Code: A Science-Based Framework for Decoding, Directing, and Transforming Workplace Conversation" at the 2026 SHRM New Jersey Annual Conference & Expo in Atlantic City.
"The goal isn't to eliminate disagreement or make every workplace conversation comfortable," Hatcher says. "It's to give people a way to recognize the story they're operating from before that story starts driving the conversation."
Hatcher has worked with leaders and teams at organizations including UBS, Raymond James, Con Edison, Spotify, Hewlett Packard, American Express and JPMorgan Chase. Her work combines communication strategy, behavioral science and techniques drawn from her earlier careers as a professional actor and television writer.
