"Former Administrator Files Whistleblower Lawsuit Against 'Connections Community Support Programs' Over Inmate Death"
WILMINGTON, Del., July 11, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Attorney Chris Johnson of The Igwe Firm filed a lawsuit today against Connections Community Support Programs, Inc. ("Connections"), on behalf of former Health Services Administrator Tracey Crews for retaliatory termination following the death of Howard Young Correctional Institution ("HYCI") inmate Luis Cabrera on November 8, 2018.
The complaint alleges that Connections violated the Delaware Whistleblowers' Protection Act and the Delaware Workers' Compensation Act when it fired Ms. Crews. According to Ms. Crews, Connections' employees and supervisors ignored her requests for pain medication and medical treatment for Mr. Cabrera, who spent the final two days of his life in agonizing pain. Connections fired Ms. Crews after she objected the denial of proper medical treatment and Connections' subsequent denial of appropriate action.
"Connections' lack of proper oversight at HYCI lead to the death of Luis Cabrera, plain and simple. When Ms. Crews complained about what she believed to be blatant inmate maltreatment, she was silenced and ultimately fired," stated Chris Johnson, Partner at The Igwe Firm, Wilmington, Delaware office. Connections fired Ms. Crews even though she was approved for workers' compensation. Doctors found that the anxiety and mental stress of Mr. Cabrera's death resulted in Ms. Crews' total disability due to major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Defendant, Connections Community Support Programs, Inc., is a nonprofit company that boasts an annual revenue of $114 million. According to the company's website, over half of that revenue comes from Connections' contract with the Delaware Department of Correction.
