Franklin County Man Cited for Operating Illegal Dog Kennel, Other Charges
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement has cited Paul S. Ebersole of Chambersburg, Franklin County, on charges of illegally operating Sunset Kennel without a license and other misdemeanors.
The kennel closed on Dec. 31, 2009, after Ebersole chose not to comply with the provisions of the new Dog Law that took effect on Oct. 9. The law requires anyone having more than 25 dogs in a year to acquire a kennel license from the bureau.
A January 2010 closing inspection of Sunset Kennel revealed there were 22 adult dogs and one puppy on the premises. However, on June 23, a search warrant executed by Franklin County's dog warden showed 40 dogs on Ebersole's property, a clear violation of the Dog Law.
"This case is disappointing since Mr. Ebersole led us to believe he would close his kennel rather than seek a license in 2010," Special Deputy Secretary for Dog Law Enforcement Jessie Smith said. "It is unfortunate that the bureau must continue to dedicate resources to monitoring operators who seemingly have relinquished their kennel license and closed, but simply choose to continue operating illegally. That's why we must remain vigilant in following up on previously licensed kennels."
Ebersole is also facing charges of failing to keep his kennel in sanitary and humane conditions because of sharp, protruding edges found throughout the facility and the accumulation of debris and waste matter along the kennel cage. There were also no records for some dogs that were on the premises.
