WASHINGTON, Feb. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Free File Alliance today announced that, through its partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, taxpayers may now use their smart phones or tablets to electronically prepare and file their federal and state tax returns through the Free File Alliance.
The IRS and its private-sector partners, who offer their brand-name software products for free, now support a new design that allows for the use of desktops, laptops, mobile phones and tablets.
You may access the products using mobile devices in two ways: (1) Use the IRS app, IRS2Go, which has a link to the Free File Software Lookup Tool or (2) use the device's browser to go to www.IRS.gov/freefile to find the software product that matches your situation. The IRS2Go app is available for Android and iOS devices.
Taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $64,000 or less will find one or more free software options. Each of the 12 software providers sets the eligibility requirements for their product, generally based on age, income or state residency. The Free File Software Look Up Tool asks a few questions to help you identify the appropriate software products.
"This new collaborative effort, by the Free File Alliance and the IRS, provides taxpayers with even more options for filing their taxes. I would like to thank the IRS and the Free File partner companies for their efforts this past year to bring more options to the American taxpayers," said Tim Hugo, executive director of the Free File Alliance.
Hugo continued, "The IRS2Go application, through the Free File program, offers taxpayers a new opportunity to file their taxes on their mobile devices. By optimizing the IRS/Free File Alliance website, it is now even easier and more convenient to file your taxes especially if you're 'on the go.'"
In conclusion, Hugo stated, "The Free File program has provided almost $1.4 billion in free tax software over the last 14 years, and we hope to see even more taxpayers take advantage of the service in 2017. IRS.gov/Free File is the one place where taxpayers can choose from a variety of the industry's most innovative and secure tax software options."
