Free Prostate Cancer Treatment Available for Uninsured Men in California

IMPACT urges all Californians with a prostate cancer diagnosis to seek treatment

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer will be the second most diagnosed cancer in California in 2025, with nearly 30,000 new cases diagnosed and 4,200 men dying from the disease. California's IMPACT program, which stands for Improving Access, Counseling and Treatment for Californians with prostate cancer, is here to help by providing free, high-quality prostate cancer treatment to low-income California residents.

The IMPACT program is the largest initiative in the country dedicated to supporting underinsured and uninsured men facing prostate cancer, ensuring that high-quality treatment is accessible to all who need it. The program is currently accepting new patients.

"We know that early detection and treatment greatly increase the chances of long-term survival," explains Mark S. Litwin, MD, MPH, professor and chair of UCLA Urology. "Yet, advanced prostate cases are increasing in California 50% more than the national average because fewer men are getting regular screenings and timely treatment. Programs like IMPACT are vital in providing timely interventions, support and resources that patients need to improve outcomes."

A collaboration between UCLA Urology and California Department of Health Care Services, the IMPACT program partners with doctors, hospitals, community providers, local health departments and community-based health organizations across the state to provide a variety of free prostate cancer treatments. The program also pairs patients with a nurse case manager to help them manage their care and better understand treatment options so they are empowered to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

To date, more than 2,300 men have received prostate cancer treatment services through the IMPACT program.

California residents who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, are 18 years of age or older and have little to no health insurance with an income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level ($64,300 per year for a family of four) may be eligible to receive free prostate cancer treatment through IMPACT.
