Investment returns are only half the picture. OpenFactsheet.org, created by a finance professor, gives a plain-English second opinion on risks and risk-adjusted performance, so people can make better-informed decisions.
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- An investment fund can report an accurate return and still leave investors with unanswered questions. Two investments showing identical returns may expose investors to very different levels of risk, including substantial losses and lengthy recovery periods that headline figures alone cannot reveal.
OpenFactsheet.org launches today to give everyday investors a free, independent second opinion on investment performance. The open-source website analyzes historical monthly returns, examining gains alongside risks and risk-adjusted performance—how much return an investment generated relative to the risk taken. It presents its findings in plain English, helping people make better-informed decisions without requiring financial expertise.
Visitors paste a table of monthly returns, which many fund factsheets publish, or upload a CSV or Excel file. Within seconds, the site examines gains alongside risk, including historical declines, recovery periods and risk-adjusted performance. The main report sets out its key findings in plain English.
OpenFactsheet applies the same consistent, published methods to every return history. Its framework spanning over 100 metrics is publicly documented: its formulas, interpretation, explanations, assumptions and academic references are open to review. Short or questionable records trigger methodological warnings rather than unwarranted claims of certainty.
Calculations run in the visitor's browser, uploaded files are not sent to the project's servers for user privacy and scalability purposes. Visitors without their own data can instantly get started with built-in synthetic data.
The site serves two audiences. Everyday investors get a readable report which can be freely exported in multiple formats. Developers, financial professionals, financial firms, capital allocators and academics get free, quantitative tools in a dedicated technical section, including a powerful well-documented open-source Python library.
"A true number can still tell an incomplete story," said Prof. Andrés A. Bagnasco, the site's creator. "Our aim is not to replace a fund manager's opinion with our own, but give people "a second opinion" of the same history, including the parts a headline return cannot convey."
Bagnasco has more than 25 years of experience in quantitative finance, AI/machine learning, investment management, and financial risk. He is the Investment Management Program Director and a postgraduate finance professor at UCU Business School. OpenFactsheet is his independent initiative, not a university-sponsored product.
OpenFactsheet provides independent, educational analysis of historical monthly returns. It does not account for individual fees, taxes or circumstances, recommend investments or predict future performance. It is neither a regulator nor an auditor and does not provide financial advice. Its purpose is to promote transparency and financial education, not to replace official disclosures or professional advice. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
